07/05/10 - It was election time in the UK this week, and my vote was for Green (Damian Green, the local Conservative MP, that is). The Conservatives dominated the South East, only missing out on three seats, and took most of the outer city seats too. Hopefully the hung parliament issue will eventually swing in their favour, but if the Conservatives do win power, it's a shame I won't get to experience much of their time under their rule, and would have had to put up with thirteen years of misery in my teenage and young adult British life under Labour... What is the point in the worker's union, by the way? People pay part of their salary to them each month, only to be influenced to go on strike, screwing up their own company, and their own jobs and livelihoods. They're even pointless on a smaller scale; I was a representitive for a disciplinary this past week, but wasn't actually allowed to get involved. I was hoping to the take the moment as an opportunity to get my points across at how much I'm starting to dislike working on my department, but I guess I'll have to find another way... 14/05/10 - After almost exactly one year of lessons in the UK, I passed my driving test on my first attempt, only receiving four minors (one for the Vehicle Check question, one for hesitation, and two for not indicating when required)! I was suprised how quickly the 45 minutes went, and I'm glad all the lessons are finally over, though I dare not think about the cost. The test day alone cost £120, the amount I paid for the entire package for my Malaysian lessons, plus the amount I paid for an independent driving instructor, whereas larger companies charge much less per lesson, and have good introductory offers; it can be argued independent instructors are better teachers (I did pass well first time), but it's all over for me now, so I really just shouldn't care... My driving pass has come just in time, as I'm going to Malaysia in three weeks (hopefully my licence arrives before I leave), but it's also my birthday today too! After a practice drive earlier in the week, I drove my brother to Harvester for a meal with my parents (we celebrated yesterday as I had to work this evening). My father seemed to theme my birthday round 'The Life Of Brian', giving a card and DVD of it, plus I received two T-Shirts and £70. Happy Birthday to me! 21/05/10 - Attended my brother's wedding yesterday in a private ceremony, with two witnesses and myself as photographer. It was a nice morning spent together, I travelled with Stuart and his bestfriend, Ryk, to the office in Folkestone, had the short service, then took photos of Stuart and Karen in a nearby park. It was nice to have done my second major piece of professional work with them. Also met a really nice Tamil-Indian Pastor (Samuel), who's studying in New York. It was a shock to find he was only 23, when he looked like he was 30. I've been trying to make myself a little money the past few weeks by buying games at discount prices from Tesco (with staff discount and coupons), and selling them on ebay, but it really doesn't seem like a worthwhile venture. I can get around 27% off all the games I buy, but ebay and Paypal take around 15% of the profit, so I think I've been wasting my time (and probably my money) trying to make something out of it... 28/05/10 - Only one week left till my seventh journey to Malaysia. My bags are all packed, though I'm a little dissapointed, having chosen Malaysian Airlines for the first time, that the baggage weight limit is only 20kg, whereas KLM allows 23kg and Emirates allows 30kg. I'm hoping if things go well on this trip that there'll be a chance I can move there at the end of the year; I'll have to see how much I can deposit there if this is to be my penultimate journey, as I'm sure I have more than 20-30kg of stuff I want to keep in my new life in Malaysia. My driving licence came through in the post this week, so I may see about renting a car whilst I'm in Malaysia too...
