Introduction: Gap Challengers: On September 15th, I will be taking a Gap Year in Malaysia with World Challenge Expeditions, flying to Kuala Lumpur via Sri Lanka. We will start off as a small group, and for the first few days we will be involved in a 'Jungle Survival Programme' in the Krau Wildlife Reserve. We will experience living from supplies of the jungle, catching fish, learning about edible fruits and healing vegetation. We may also visit the Orang Asli ('original people') and learn their culture and lifestyle. Then we will all go onto our separate placements and I will be doing Care Work for the first three months near Kuala Lumpur. I'll be there until around mid-December and will be looking after destitute children in a care home called the Shepherd's Centre. It is home to around 100 children and relies on voluntary donations. I'll be helping children that don't go to school, working with younger children on Arts and Crafts or music, and working alongside the office staff. I'll then have a short Christmas break, then in January I'll be going to town called Lawas in Eastern Sarawak, situated on the banks of the Batang Lawas river. I'll be there for three months at a teaching centre called Pusat Tuisyen Sistematik. It isn't a school, but a place that offers extra teaching to children and will do the same for adults in the future. There are around 100 children aged 7-18 enrolled there, with 5 staff and 3 classrooms. Classes have around 15 students and are taught for approximately 4 hours a day, teaching English, Maths and Science. Comments Board: |
